Interested in using your time and gifts to help others and share in ministry here at St. Matthew’s? Below are just some of the opportunities to serve and become involved:
Sunday School is offered on a weekly basis (excluding the summer months) at the 10:00 am service in The Fellowship Hall. Each week we explore a Bible story, enjoy fun activities, pray and learn about our faith. Children later rejoin their families (usually with some project or drawing!) at the start of communion.
Located in our Welcome Room, our nursery offers a safe, engaging and interactive setting for infants to age 3. Even if you don’t plan to leave your child to stay in the nursery, you are most welcome to drop in to feed or change your little one.
The Altar Guild work behind the scenes to ensure that the altar is ready for the Sunday services. This includes washing and cleaning the vessels, preparing the wine and bread and making sure the linens are clean. They are also responsibility for decorating our worship space for Easter, Thanksgiving and Harvest, preparing for special services like baptisms, weddings and funerals, and for the arrangement of weekly altar flowers.
The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings. They sing at our weekly Sunday services as well as other special services throughout the year. The choir is under the guidance and skillful direction of choirmaster and organist, Mr. David Braund.
20s & 30s Group
Once a month a group of 20 and 30 somethings get together at a local restaurant for a delicious meal and engaging conversation. Over the course of our meal we cover everything from politics, world concerns, and what’s trending.
On an almost monthly basis, the men of St Matthew’s meet together for fellowship and conversation (often very lively!). This popular event is normally held at Windfields, one of the local restaurants in the area.
Through our Outreach ministry at St. Matthew’s, we support a number of local and global organizations working to help others in many different ways. Some of the groups we offer support to are: FaithWorks, Information Fairview, Lansing Food Bank, Mission to Seafarers, Moorelands, North York Women’s Shelter, Oriole Food Space, Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, and Turtle House.
Good Food Market
During the summer months St. Matthew’s, in partnership with Food Share, offer a not for profit food market to our community. Fresh produce is sold at an affordable price in an effort to address food access, scarcity and affordability in our local community. Run entirely by parish and community volunteers, the market is a warm, inviting and hospitable place where people not only have access to healthy and affordable food but visit with their neighbours. Forest Manor Reading Program
Each week a group of parish volunteers assist in an after school reading program at one of our local schools, Forest Manor. Volunteers read one on one with the students, encouraging a love of reading and help the children improve their reading and language skills.
The Communications Committee
Volunteers are responsible for communicating church information within and beyond the congregation. They help devise graphic looks, assist in photographing church activities, and are ready to assist the incumbent in whatever form of communications may be needed. Together, this helps to keep St Matthew’s news current and available.
Funds for St Matthews are raised in many ways through events like the Annual Bazaar, Fall Walk-a-thon, “Junk in the Trunk” sale, and more. The Fund Raising volunteers are a dedicated team who work hard to both add to the sense of community here at the parish that comes from putting on such events as well as raising funds needed to support our parish’s ongoing ministry.
Each of us has many gifts: gifts of time, gifts of talent, and gifts of treasure. St. Matthew’s has always been and continues to be a vibrant community because of the generous support of parishioners and friends. The Stewardship Committee helps to educate the congregation in the different ways we are called to share all that we have been given by God in ways that are joyful and sacrificial so the ministry of St. Matthew’s can continue to make a difference in the lives of others.
Several mornings a week the walking group meets for fellowship and exercise. During the walks outside we view and prayerfully consider all of God’s creation. This group also organizes the annual church walkathon allowing others to share in viewing all that is in our parish community.
